Breast Cancer Therapy

Breast cancer, like prostate cancer, is very complex. However, also in the case of breast cancer therapy, the strategy is to destroy or shrink the tumour quickly, which is also the aim of the well-known therapies which are also utilized regarding other forms of cancer, and in which cytostatic and biochemical therapies are used. However, it has to be borne in mind that this form of breast cancer therapy can not destroy metastases or residual cells.

The most common type of breast cancer therapy is surgery, the aim of which is to remove the tumour quickly. However, this method is by no means certain. There is a high risk of metastases remaining in the body, which can cause a serious cancer ailment at any time. In addition, some doctors believe that surgery as a breast cancer therapy has the opposite effect of that which is intended. They claim that the tumour can thereby come away from the surrounding tissue and spread uncontrollably.

Radiation therapy is also used in breast cancer therapy as a second method of treatment. This radiation consists of x-rays and gamma rays which damage the genetic substance of the cancer cells so severely that they die. As already explained, this therapy also damages the cells of healthy breast tissue.  A further problem regarding this breast cancer therapy is posed by metastases which spread out and can not be detected this way. This therapy is at best suitable in combination with surgery or for the treatment of inoperable tumours.

A type of breast cancer therapy which is not common in Germany, as it is not well known, is the percutaneous Electro-Carcinoma-Therapy (ECT). In this breast cancer therapy, a direct current is fed into the tumour in the hope that it will then shrink or disappear completely. A diagnostic method which originated in the area of nuclear medicine is the so-called Positron-Emission-Tomography (PET). This plays a major role in cancer diagnosis.
