ABSTRACT

Electrochemical therapy was used to treat cavernous hemangioma in 48 patient. The location of the tumor was on cheek (14), neck (13), oral cavity (8), chest wall (6), limbs (2) and liver (5). The biggest tumor was 18.0 x 13.0 cm in diameter and the smallest was 3.5 x 4.0 cm. After local anesthesia, we inserted electrodes that made of platinum into tumor. The electrodes were connected to positive and negative output of ECT machine by wires and then treatment started. Clinical effectiveness: 34 patients with CR since hemangioma disappeared completely and the patients‘ appearance returned to normal; 11 patients with PR since tumor minimized half times and their appearance improved; other 3 patients were PD as their appearance didn‘t improve and size costumer minimized only about ¼ . The total effective rate of CR plus PR was 93.7%. Key words: electrochemical therapy cavernous hemangioma clinical effectiveness

Cavernous hemangioma is a benign congenital disease. lt is usually neglected in early stage or in visceral organs, but it is difficult to be cured when the tumor grew bigger and produced symptoms by compression. Severe deformities were occurred when the tumor grew on the head, face and neck. Three cases with hemangioma were operated in the hospital with unsuccessful result, because of rich collateral circulation and uncontrolled bleeding. In recent years, it is found that ECT could result in thrombosis in peripheral blood vessels of liver cancer and stop spleen bleeding quickly during animal experiments. Hence ECT was tried to treat cavernous hemangioma. In 1992, first case of hp cavernous hemangioma was treated with ECT successfully. Then 48 patients who got cavernous hemangioma were treated one by one with satisfactory results.

Materials

From November 1992 to June 1995, 48 cases were treated. There were 33 male and 15 female with an average of 17.8 (4 months —46 years) years. (Tab.-l). Twelve cases were diagnosed in early stage with tumor size of 3.5 — 5.0 cm diameter. Other 36 cases were in hate stage with multiple lesions invading adjacent tissues or with diameter of 5.1 18.0 cm (Tab. -2). Occipital bone was found invaded in one case which diameter of the mass was 10.0 cm. In another case, the tumor invaded upper jaw bone and the diameter was 18.0 cm. There was one case with the tumor invaded lower jaw bone. Severe deformities were occurred on the appearance since bones were destroyed.

All cases were diagnosed according to ultrasonography, angiography and clinical examination. Thirteen cases once were operated unsuccessfully because of uncontrolled severe bleeding, five cases were ineffective to radiotherapy and other three cases ineffective to injection of hardener. (Table 1)
